The BOLD Business Brief : August 2026: Stop Being the Bottleneck

Clarity. Leadership. Systems. Growth. Helping Business Owners Become Business Leaders.

Are you building a business this August, or just keeping one alive?

As summer starts to wind down, a lot of owners feel that familiar pull to get back to "real work."

But let's be honest. What do you call real work?

If it's answering every email, solving every issue, and approving every little decision, you’re not leading a business. You’re propping one up.

I was talking with a business owner recently who told me he couldn't take a week off because "everything falls apart." Twenty minutes later we realized the problem wasn't his team. It was that every decision still required him. That owner wasn't leading a business. He was carrying one.

Real work is building a business that can function without you.

And if your business can't function without you, you own a job, not a business.

As we head into the final stretch of 2026, this is the shift: stop being the bottleneck and start leading on purpose.

The Biggest Growth Barrier Isn't Your Team: It's You

The hardest person to fire is yourself.

More specifically, you need to fire yourself from the role of Chief Problem Solver.

It feels good to be the hero, doesn't it? Someone brings you a mess, you fix it fast, and everybody moves on.

That feeling is the trap.

Every time you take the decision back, you teach your team to wait on you. You train the business to stall until you show up.

THE BOTTLENECK IS ALWAYS AT THE TOP OF THE BOTTLE.

That’s why you have to understand the difference between working IN the business and working ON the business.

Every Owner Has Two Jobs

Every Owner Has Two Jobs infographic showing the difference between working in the business and working on the business.

Most owners stay stuck because they spend all day in the left column and wonder why the right column never gets done.

You are not paid to be the best firefighter in the building. You are paid to build a business that catches less fire.

If you're still the one holding the screwdriver, who’s holding the compass?

Coach's Corner: The Owner Identity Shift

One of the biggest mindset shifts I see happens when an owner realizes they aren't the solution anymore.

Early on, your value comes from doing. As your business grows, your value comes from leading. That's uncomfortable because it feels like you're doing less. In reality, you're creating far more impact.

That’s the shift from working IN the business to working ON the business.

When you're working IN the business, you’re handling customers, answering questions, solving problems, and making sure the day holds together.

When you're working ON the business, you’re building the systems, leaders, expectations, and priorities that make the business stronger next month, not just easier today.

Most owners know this. Very few actually live it.

Why? Because being needed feels productive. It feels valuable. It feels safe.

But if every important decision still has to run through you, the business hasn’t really grown. It has just become more dependent on you.

I had another owner tell me, "I finally realized my team wasn’t failing me. I was training them to wait." That’s a hard sentence to say out loud. It’s also the kind of honesty that changes a business.

If your business can't function without you, you don't own a business. You own a job.

And here's the question underneath all of it: Are you brave enough to be redundant?

Because real leadership is not about being needed in every moment. It’s about building something that works, grows, and makes decisions without everything getting stuck at your desk.

Quick Win: Three Questions to Ask Every Friday

You do not need a massive overhaul this week.

You need 10 quiet minutes before you shut the laptop on Friday.

Ask yourself:

  • What did I do this week that only I should do?
  • What did I do that someone else should be learning to own?
  • What problem showed up again that needs a system, not another rescue?

Write the answers down.

Do this for four Fridays in a row and you'll start to see the pattern. Where are you still too deep IN the business? What needs to move off your plate? What needs a process before next year?

If you can't step away for even a long weekend without things wobbling, read Clockwork by Mike Michalowicz.

It’s a simple reminder that the goal is not to be more available. The goal is to build a business that works without

constant owner rescue.

Let's Talk

As we head into Q4, this is the time of year I help owners step back and ask:

  • Where am I still the bottleneck?
  • What needs to be delegated?
  • What systems need to be built before next year?
